Roger Marshall got mothers arrested because they could not afford to pay their medical bills after giving birth. I try to stay out of national politics. My focus is right here in Southeast Kansas, fighting for the working people of our community, but I feel the need to speak out about this. A new investigation by The New York Times found that Roger Marshall sued more than 700 patients over unpaid medical bills during his career as a doctor. 81 of those patients were arrested. His lawyers sought arrest warrants in additional cases, garnished patients' wages and bank accounts, and routinely charged 18% annual interest on their medical debt. Some of the bills were as little as $101. One Kansas mother was arrested three separate times over a C-section bill. Another Kansas couple was arrested over a $4,561 bill from an emergency hysterectomy. Their grandchildren were preparing for an Easter egg hunt when police showed up at their home. These weren't wealthy people trying to avoid paying their bills. They were working families trying to keep the lights on, put food on the table, pay the rent, and take care of their children, all while dealing with medical bills they couldn’t afford. The actions outlined in this investigation are downright evil. Roger Marshall is unfit to represent Kansas in the United States Senate.
