36 years ago, my wife LaVon and I started a United Methodist church here in Kansas. We built it from the ground up – literally – and it grew into something we could not have imagined. Today, our congregation is 24,000 members strong. I love my job. But in recent years, I began to see the values I've spent decades preaching being eroded in Washington. I found myself thinking: "Somebody needs to do something." I kept being called to the Sermon on the Mount – specifically, the Beatitudes. Blessed are the merciful. Blessed are the peacemakers. That's how we're called to live our lives, and that's why I decided to run for the United States Senate here in Kansas – because I believe our values are worth fighting for.
